THE PAINFUL KNEE

Knee pain is prevalent among seniors.  Common reasons are poor alignment – knock knees, bowed legs, fallen foot arches, weak hip muscles from hip surgery.  Other causes are past trauma, being overweight and previous knee or hip surgery.   All these affect the mechanics of the knee and entire leg, resulting in excessive loading and stress to the knee joint.  Consequences are pain, stiffness, loss of strength and mobility, difficulty standing up, sitting down, and climbing stairs, altered walking patterns some requiring a cane or walker.

Rehabilitation sessions aim to:

  1. Stretch tight muscles and strengthen weak muscles around the hip and knee
  2. Restore and maintain knee range of motion
  3. Correct knee alignment and mechanics
  4. Improve lower body balance and coordination
  5. Educate on normal walking patterns and use of a walking aid if needed

If the patient can incorporate new habits and perform home exercises independently, progress can be accelerated.  It is realistic to relieve symptoms and improve function for many seniors with knee pain.

At Phyiso For Seniors, we offer Rehabilitation Program which is specifically designed to increase and maintain mobility and independence while enhancing the quality of life for seniors. The program is conducted by experienced and trained rehabilitation assistants specializing in geriatric rehabilitation under the supervision of a physiotherapist.
