Integrated Systems Model

Did you know that a neck restriction can cause knee pain without the neck ever hurting? Or a compressed, misaligned foot can lead to back or shoulder pain? Yes, it is true that misalignment and restrictions in one part of the body can contribute to a chain of events leading to symptoms in a distant part.

At Physio For Seniors, our physiotherapists are alignment and movement experts of the musculoskeletal system and can help you identify the true source of your pain and more importantly, how to resolve it for good.

Physiotherapy started as a profession to help people alleviate pain and restore their function after injury and disease. The main emphasis was on passive treatments like heat and massage. The new generation of physiotherapists emphasizes movement as an essential element of health and well-being.

We assess the entire body, including the individual’s expectations, thoughts, and feelings, to identify the factors contributing to their condition. We then develop a program with long-term outcomes in mind. It is through this shift in focus to the whole body as an integrated system that Physio For Seniors in Howe Street and Denman Street, BC Area excels.

What is the integrated systems model?

In physiotherapy, we understand the importance of the interdependence of the body’s systems. Our body consists of an intricate and interconnected web of connective tissue, muscles, joints, and nerves. This means that tension in one part can take up slack and reduce mobility in a distant part.

Movements are programmed by the brain that senses and controls muscle tone, tissue tension and posture. The brain adapts to injuries with compensations that help the body to function at its best. Symptoms arise when the compensations become mal-adaptive over time, leading to increased stress and strain to tissues and excessive loading on joints.

When functioning correctly, these systems work as an integrated unit. If one or more parts break down or become restricted for any reason, it will undoubtedly affect the rest of the body. Our physiotherapists use the integrated systems model to identify seemingly unrelated impairments in different anatomical regions that may contribute to or cause your primary complaint.

Too often, people assume that their pain is also the site of their problem. We can help you weed through your symptoms and identify the root cause of your condition. Our integrated approach will address the weakest link in the chain, no matter where that link is, even if it is at a distance from the symptomatic area.

An integrated approach aims to alleviate pain, improve mobility and restore balance to the whole body.
