MOBILITY – ESSENTIAL TO HEALTH AGING

Mobility is being able to move freely in one’s own environment such as home, work and in the community for activities of daily living. We need to move to go grocery shopping, participate in family life, social activities, work, sports and other essential life tasks.

Having mobility for an older adult is important because it gives a sense of independence and freedom, which elevates self-esteem.  The loss of mobility is depressing because it means dependence on others and reminds them they are getting old.

Causes of mobility loss:

1) Physical – Injuries, Illness, Chronic Disease (heart, lung, Parkinson’s, cancer)

2) Cognitive – Dementia, Stroke

3) Environmental – Hospital Stay or Move to a Senior Home

Being physically active when you are young can delay or slow the process of aging as you get older. It is possible to prevent chronic health conditions from developing when you stay active and move a lot.

If you do experience mobility loss, it is hopeful to know that it can be reversed. Patients often respond well to physiotherapy and exercise programs.  Physical activity is a very important component to overall health.  It helps with quality sleep, immunity, circulation, digestion, breathing and elimination.  The important message here is to stay active and avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
