Treating Parkinson’s Disease Balance Problems in Seniors with In-Home Physiotherapy

Are you or someone you love struggling with Parkinson’s disease balance problems? Balance and gait can both be profoundly affected by Parkinson’s disease–and with the loss of these abilities, your quality of life can drop dramatically. However, physiotherapy offers care options to help you maintain your independence and mobility for as long as possible.

To illustrate, we want to share Mary’s story. Mary (not her real name) began experiencing severe Parkinson’s disease balance problems in her early 70s. Walking even short distances became a struggle, and her fear of falling made her reluctant to leave her home.

Although she knew physiotherapy could help, due to her mobility limitations, she could not attend sessions at a clinic. However, Physio for Seniors offered an alternative: in-home physiotherapy.

Keep reading to learn more about how we helped Mary–and how we can help you or a loved one, too.

Understanding Mary’s Problems with Balance and Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that causes a range of symptoms that can affect balance and gait. In Mary’s case, her balance challenges stemmed from the following:

Muscle Rigidity

  •  Stiffness in Mary’s leg muscles made movement difficult.

Bradykinesia

  • This term refers to the slowed movements that are a hallmark of Parkinson’s disease. Bradykinesia prevented Mary from making quick adjustments to maintain her balance, increasing her fall risk.

Postural Instability

  • Maintaining an upright posture became increasingly challenging, further limiting Mary’s mobility.

How In-Home Physiotherapy Helped Mary Improve Her Balance Problems

During Mary’s first session, her physiotherapist met with her in the comfort of her home to conduct a thorough assessment of her balance challenges and her home environment. Together, they developed a care plan to improve her balance and mobility.

The personalized approach of in-home therapy provided Mary with the tools she needed to regain confidence and independence. Key elements of her program included the following:

Weight-Shifting Drills

  • These exercises helped Mary improve her stability while standing and moving.

Gait Training

  • Mary’s therapist worked on improving her stride length and reducing her shuffling, making walking smoother and safer.

Strength-Building Exercises

  • Mary learned several exercises to improve her core and lower body strength, helping to improve her posture and overall movement.

Home Modifications

  • In addition to exercises, her physiotherapist helped identify and modify hazards in Mary’s home. This included rearranging furniture and installing grab bars in high-risk areas to further enhance her safety.

Mobility Aids

  • Finally, we helped Mary identify the right mobility aids for her needs. A walker ensures Mary can confidently move about her house, helping her be more independent.

What Were the Results?

Parkinson’s disease has no cure, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and maintaining independence for as long as possible. With our help, Mary felt steadier in her movements and developed a renewed confidence in her ability to care for herself. She found it easier to perform daily tasks, such as cooking and light cleaning, and she began exercising regularly.

Mary’s results are a great example of the transformative power of in-home physiotherapy for individuals managing Parkinson’s disease balance problems.
