SAFE TRANSFERS WITH A 4 WHEELED WALKER
Statistically, a high number of falls occur when transferring from standing to a seated position. Having to use a walker can be awkward unless you know how.
- Keep the walker in front of you at ALL times.
- Face your walker and turn WITH it in unison. Do not move your walker and then you, or move your body and then the walker.
- Practice turning with your walker keeping your feet between the rear wheels at all times.
- Practice taking backwards steps with your walker so you that you feel confident backing up into a chair.
- Only sit down when you feel the chair behind both of your legs.
- USE THE BRAKES: Before sitting down apply the brakes.
- Stand up by PUSHING up with your hands from the chair rather than PULLING on the walker to help you.
- Practice SIT TO STANDS 10 times in a row. This is one of the best ways for seniors to exercise the right muscles for mobility.
MAINTENANCE
A walker is only safe when regularly cleaned and maintained
- Aim for a monthly check for your walker. Brakes wear out, screws come loose and parts can gather dirt.
- You or someone who cares for you can prevent accidents by replacing old brake pads, cleaning sticky wheels, and ensuring all the nuts and bolts are secure.
- Remember that a walker is there to keep you safe, not to be the cause of harm.
