Why Are Fall Risks Higher Among the Elderly?
Every year, 20%-30% of Canadian adults aged 65 or higher experience a fall each year–and 85% of those falls lead to hospitalizations!
There are many reasons why falls are more likely among older adults. A significant contributing factor is simply the reality of aging: as we get older, our body undergoes physical, cognitive, and sensory changes that can make it challenging to stay on our feet. Furthermore, several age-related motor or neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease or stroke, dramatically increase fall risk.
That said, everyone’s fall risk is different. You can determine yours by looking at several different factors–the more factors apply, the greater the risk. Here are some of those factors:
- Mobility limitations, including impaired walking patterns
- Joint stiffness
- Muscle weakness
- Balance difficulties
- Dizziness, vertigo, or feelings of unsteadiness
- Taking certain medications
- Cognitive decline (memory loss, confusion, etc.)

Balance Training for the Elderly: The Importance of a Customized Approach
Fall prevention is a comprehensive approach to physiotherapy that combines exercise and mobility work with education and strategies for managing your individual fall risk. Balance training is almost always included in that program, as improving your balance is a big piece of keeping you on your feet.
Balance training consists of targeted exercises that challenge your balance and stability, helping you to gradually see improvements over time. It can also include exercises to improve posture and strength (especially core strength), as both play a big role in your overall balancing ability.
We customize our balance training programs to address your specific needs. When we visit you for your first appointment, we’ll conduct a comprehensive balance assessment that helps us understand the roots of your balance challenges. We’ll take a complete health history and run simple balance and walking tests that will let us know more about your specific challenges.
We’ll then develop your customized program, which consists of balance-specific exercises appropriate to your ability level. That said, they will be challenging! Pushing you a little bit out of your comfort zone is the best way to see improvements over time, but our therapists will be there every step of the way to ensure you don’t injure yourself.
Here’s a sample of some of the exercises we might suggest:
- Getting in and out of a chair without using your hands
- Standing on one foot while lifting and the other leg (with or without holding onto something)
- Walking in a heel-to-toe pattern
- Walking knee lifts
We might also suggest that you take up Yoga and tai chi, two beloved forms of gentle exercise that can promote balance. And as you improve, we’ll also begin incorporating functional training, such as walking across uneven surfaces.
