The elderly should be respected, treasured and protected. Many have made sacrifices and worked hard to serve their families, communities and countries. Now that they are advanced in age, they should reap the rewards of their life’s work and live in contentment. In some societies, the elderly are revered for their life experience and wisdom and in other parts of the world, they are seen as a burden, a drain on resources and become outcast and marginalized. The value and worth of a human appears to depreciate with diminishing youth, vigour and beauty, while real estate appreciates in value. I feel that all humans: young or old, male or female, rich or poor, fair or dark-skinned, gay or straight have equal value and worth. There is no difference, all are just as precious and worthy of love and affirmation. There are unique challenges in each stage of life and no matter our identity. The elderly face not only physical challenges but also mental, social and emotional ones as well. Life can be very difficult and they become helpless and dependent like children. They need our support, encouragement and our presence to walk with them on their difficult journey. Find ways to show love and encouragement to an elderly person today.
